Just two years ago, Syracuse ranked as one of the worst teams in division 1 football. They not only sucked in the Big East, they also had trouble taking down non-AQ schools.
Now, they are the New Era Pinstripe Bowl champions. While it is not a premier bowl game, it is a step in the right direction for the Orangemen.
When Syracuse hired Doug Marrone as head coach two years ago, I thought they were making a mistake. Although he was a Syracuse alumni with NFL experience, I didn't think he was the right guy.
I thought Turner Gill should've gotten the job considering he was already a successful college football coach and had New York State coaching ties while at the University of Buffalo.
But, Syracuse went against me and couldn't of been more right with their decision.
Doug Marrone has turned the program around in his two short years there.
After a mediocre 1st season going 4-8, Marrone had Syracuse in contention for the Big East Championship for most of this season and finished the regular season 7-5.
Syracuse went to their first bowl game since 2004 and got their first bowl win since 2001 with their win over Kansas State today.
In all, they finished 8-5 this year and had one of the most surprising seasons in division 1 football.
While, they still struggle at times, Syracuse looks like a team on the rise. They have potential and are starting to play like CUSE fans expect.
With the Big East being as weak as it is, it may only be a matter of time before Syracuse is a football power once again.
Thank You Doug Marrone
