On Tuesday night, we got to see the next chapter of the Big 4 rivalry between SUNY Buffalo (UB) and Niagara University. The rivalry has provided great games between good teams throughout the years. Unfortunately, we didn't get to see any of that this year as UB dominated Niagara 82-64.
UB took the lead early on and ran away with the game. UB had balanced scoring as four Bulls scored in double-digits. Byron Mulkey led the way for UB with 19 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 5 steals. Jawaan Alston added 16 points off the bench and Mitchell Watt also scored in double-digits as he added 14 points.
The game was never really close as it entered halftime with UB up 43-30.
Despite the loss, Niagara did have a few players who stood out. Kashief Edwards recorded 18 points and 7 rebounds while Anthony Nelson had 10 assists.
With the win, UB moves to 5-3 and next plays December 11th at home vs. Green Bay.
With the loss, Niagara falls to 2-7 and next plays December 11th vs. one of their other Big 4 rivals in St. Bonaventure.
It's a shame that tonight's rivalry game had to be a blowout but that's the way it goes sometimes. UB is having a surprising season to this point and are enjoying some early season success after a disappointing end to last season. On the other side, Niagara is playing some uncharacteristically bad basketball. They can't seem to get it going and are struggling more this year than they have at any point in the last decade
