DeAndre Kane and Tirrell Baines came up big for Marshall as they took down Ohio University 65-57. The game was a matchup of former MAC rivals and rising mid-major basketball programs.
Marshall is a middle of the pack Conference USA team and came into Saturday's action with a 4-2 record. They defeated Ohio last season and looked confident entering their matchup.
The game was close throughout with neither team possessing a lead larger than 8 points the entire game. Ohio got out to a fast start taking an early 9-2 lead. But their lead quickly evaporated as Marshall entered the half up 27-23.
The game stayed close in the second half but Ohio could never get the lead. Ohio tied the game at 55-55 with a little over 3:00 minutes left in the second half but Marshall would take control from there.
D.J. Cooper had a good game for Ohio with 22 points, 9 rebounds, and 6 assists. DeVaughn Washington and Ivo Baltic each scored in double digits with 10 points apiece. Despite their efforts, Ohio simply didn't play well enough to win.
DeAndre Kane and Tirrell Baines stood out for Marshall. Kane finished with 18 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists while Baines recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
One reason why Ohio lost was because of their poor shooting. Ohio shot only 33.3% from the field compared to Marshall shooting at 44.7%. Ohio has a tendency to shoot very poorly in their losses.
With the loss, Ohio falls to 4-3 and next plays December 8th at Illinois State.
