Late on Tuesday night, sources have told ESPN's Sportscenter that Cliff Lee has informed the New York Yankees that they are no longer in the running for him.
The Yankees reportedly offered Lee a 6 year contract worth $138 million dollars with a 7th year option worth $16 million dollars.
The news comes on the same day that reports came out that the Phillies had entered the running in the Cliff Lee sweepstakes.
Cliff Lee is widely regarded as the best free agent in baseball this offseason. He is coming off a year where he split time between the Seattle Mariners and the Texas Rangers.
He won the 2008 AL Cy Young award with the Cleveland Indians and has pitched in the World Series the last two years with the Philadelphia Phillies and the Texas Rangers.
There were reports earlier in the offseason that Yankees fans treated Lee's wife horribly when Lee pitched against the Yankees in the ALCS. Reports stated that fans at Yankee stadium threw cups and drinks at her as well as cursing at her.
We'll just have to wait and see where Cliff Lee ends up. One thing is for sure, he will not be signing with the New York Yankees.
Report just cam out that he came to an agreement with the Phillies.
