On Tuesday, the Buffalo Sabres took on the Boston Bruins in a matchup that featured the NHL's last two Vezina Trophy winners. Tim Thomas and the Bruins edged Ryan Miller and the Sabres on this night as the Bruins came back from a third period deficit to win 3-2 in overtime.
Ryan Miller entered the game posting shutouts in back to back games. Unfortunately for Miller, he saw his shutout streak end midway through the first period as Milan Lucic scored to put the Bruins up 1-0.
After a boring first period, the game started to liven up in the second period. Luke Adam scored his first career NHL goal to tie the game at 1-1.
From there on, momentum started to turn towards Buffalo.
In the third, Vanek scored from behind the Bruins net to put Buffalo ahead 2-1. Thomas was slow to get back in net and Vanek slapped the puck off of his back for the goal.
But the Sabres lead wasn't meant to last. Mike Weber made and awful turnover and the puck went straight to Nathan Horton who cashed it in to tie the game at 2-2. Horton was skating to the Sabres net when the puck went to his stick. Miller had no time to react and Horton had an easy goal.
The game entered overtime tied at 2-2.
Early in overtime, Derek Roy got robbed on a Tim Thomas poke check. Roy was in front of the Bruins goalie all by himself but couldn't cash it in. Thomas made a brilliant poke check and the game stayed tied at 2-2.
Then, midway through overtime, Luke Adam took a double-minor high sticking penalty that gave the Bruins the powerplay for the remainder of overtime.
With the man advantage, Mark Recchi scored for the Bruins and they won 3-2.
The Sabres return to action Thursday night at home against the San Jose Sharks.
