Stafford's Hat-Trick Leads Sabres In Comeback Victory Over Tampa Bay


Wow!........ That's all Tampa Bay fan's could say after seeing the Sabres score five goals in the third period to comeback and defeat the Lightning 7-4 on Tuesday night.

The game got off to a decent start.

Steve Bergenheim opened the scoring as he put Tampa Bay ahead 1-0 early in the first period.

Then, 10 minutes later, Drew Stafford responded for the Sabres scoring his first of three goals on the night to tie the game at 1-1.

In the second period, the Sabres got thoroughly dominated.

Vincent Lecavalier and Steve Bergenheim scored for Tampa Bay to give the Lightning a two goal lead at 3-1.

The Lightning heavily outshot the Sabres and controlled the flow for the majority of the period.

But late in the period, Thomas Vanek scored for the Sabres to bring the Sabres within one.

Vanek's goal might've only counted as one goal on the scoreboard but it meant much more to the Sabres. It gave Buffalo the momentum entering the second intermission and had them coming out flying in the third period.

In the third period, the Sabres went on a goal scoring rage.

The Sabres scored five consecutive goals to start the third period to take a 7-3 lead.

Jordan Leopold scored the game tying goal while Tim Connolly scored to give the Sabres their first lead of the game at 4-3.

Then, Vanek added his second goal of the game to give the Sabres a 5-3 lead.

Vanek's three point night was his second consecutive game with three points.

The Sabres weren't done though.

Drew Stafford scored two more goals late in the third period to complete the hat-trick and give the Sabres the 7-3 lead.

For Stafford, its his third hat-trick of the season and fifth of his career. Stafford is enjoying his best season in the pros and has helped the Sabres out immensely while in the lineup.

Vincent Lecavalier scored a garbage time power play goal to bring the game to its final score of 7-4.

Lecavalier had a good game despite the loss scoring two goals and recording an assist.

The win helps the Sabres a lot in the playoffs standings.

The Sabres stand in 10th place in the eastern conference and are only four points back of 8th place Carolina with two games in hand.

Also, they only stand three points back of 9th place Atlanta with four games in hand.

The Sabres next play February 10th at Florida.
