Sabres Acquire Brad Boyes

The first player to come to the Buffalo Sabres under the Pegula ownership is Brad Boyes. On Sunday night, the St. Louis Blues center was traded to the Sabres for Buffalo's 2011 second round draft pick.

Boyes is a 28 year-old forward in his 6th season in the NHL. He currently has 12 goals and 29 assists on the year for a total of 41 points.

The addition of Boyes makes a lot of sense for the Sabres. The Sabres needed offense and Boyes will provide it. Boyes has had three seasons of at least 60 points including 08-09 when he had 72 points. He also has two 30-goal seasons and lit the lamp for 43 goals in 07-08 for the Blues.

Boyes has been struggling in the past few season though. After posting back-to-back 60+ point seasons in 07-08/08-09, Boyes only recorded 42 points last season and is only on pace for 54 points this season.

But, the trade still makes plenty of sense for Buffalo. Only giving up a second draft pick makes this trade a steal for the Sabres. Boyes produces at a fine level and is definitely worth giving up the pick.

As far as Boyes contract, he has one year remaining after this year at $4 million dollars.

One other thing to be noted is that Lindy Ruff stated that Boyes would start out by playing on the same line as Tim Connolly. Connolly was not traded on Monday and will stay with the Sabres for the rest of the season.

All in all, I like the trade for the Sabres. He is a much bigger name then they have brought in during the past few years and has had some good seasons in the past.

Sabres Win In Pegula's Debut As Owner

What a night for Sabres fans. A day after the announced sale of the Sabres to billionaire Terry Pegula, Buffalo put out its best effort as they defeated the Atlanta Thrashers 4-1.

Pegula was introduced to the crowd before the game as he received a standing ovation for over a minute. Sabres fans are excited about the ownership change and believe that Pegula gives them a better chance to win the Stanley Cup in the future.

The Sabres got on the scoreboard first as Tyler Myers scored his ninth goal of the year seven minutes into the first period to put the Sabres up 1-0.

A little over five minutes into the second period, Atlanta tied the game at 1-1 when Andrew Ladd beat Ryan Miller for his 22nd goal of the year.

But the Sabres weren't going to let Atlanta defeat them on this special night.

Paul Gaustad and Jason Pominville scored within 30 seconds of each other with under two minutes remaining in the second period to give the Sabres the 3-1 lead entering the second intermission.

Then, Tyler Ennis scored less than two minutes into the third period to put the game away for Buffalo as they went on to win 4-1.

Ryan Miller had his A game on Wednesday night. Miller made 40 saves on 41 shots and was terrific the entire night.

Also having a good game was Tyler Myers.

It was nice to see Tyler Myers get a goal and an assist on the night. He is finally starting to get his game back after a horrible start to the season.

For the Sabres, the win was significant for a variety of reasons.

-They won in Terry Pegula's first game as the owner of the Buffalo Sabres.

-They move within three points of Carolina for the final playoff spot in the eastern conference with two games in hand.

-They came in tied for 9th in the eastern conference with Atlanta. Now the Sabres are in sole 9th place two points ahead of the Thrashers.

The Sabres don't get much time to rest following tonight's win over Atlanta. Buffalo is back in action Friday when they take on the Ottawa Senators.

Freeman Sets Ohio University 3-Point Record As Bobcats Defeat Bowling Green

Tommy Freeman has just made Ohio Bobcats basketball history. On Wednesday night, he made five three-pointers as he broke Ohio University's school record for most three-pointers in a career. For now, the record stands at 244 as Freeman helped lead Ohio to a crucial 70-60 victory over Bowling Green revenging a loss to the Falcons from earlier in the season.

Ohio got off to a great start as they quickly got off to an 11-2 lead. Freeman set the record early and everything seemed to be going right for the Bobcats.

But then Ohio fell asleep. The Bobcats offense disappeared in the second part of the first half as Bowling Green came back to take a 32-30 lead at the half.

Bowling Green continued to lead until midway through the second half when DeVaughn Washington made a layup to put the Bobcats ahead 41-40.

The game remained tight for a period of time as both teams kept trading baskets before Ohio finally put the game away for good winning 70-60.

Rebounding was key for the Bobcats in the game. Ohio out-rebounded Bowling Green 42-25 for the game and grabbed 18 offensive rebounds. This led to Ohio to outscore Bowling Green 17-6 on second chance points and was a major difference in the game.

As stated earlier, Tommy Freeman broke the Ohio University career three-pointers record. He also had 20 points in the game and was crucial for the Bobcats in the second half scoring 11 of his 20 points then.

DeVaughn Washington and Reggie Keely played great games down low. Washington had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds and Keely nearly had a double-double with 9 points and 12 rebounds.

With the win, Ohio moves to 15-13 (7-6) and moves into a tie for 5th in the MAC East with Bowling Green.

The Bobcats have won seven of their last nine games and next play Saturday at Kent State.

Ohio Holds On To Defeat Winthrop In Overtime

Ohio is finally back over .500 for the season. It has been a mark that the Bobcats have been reaching for ever since falling to Robert Morris to end their non-conference season at 7-7.

They have had many down moments this season and have fallen as low as 8-11 overall. But as of late, Ohio has been playing better ball. They have won six of their last eight games to get themselves over .500 and re-establish themselves as MAC contenders.

The victory that put Ohio back over .500 was a 77-74 overtime victory over Winthrop.

Ohio dominated early as they got off to a 26-6 lead 10 minutes into the first half. Everything was clicking for Ohio on offense and defense as they couldn't be stopped.

But then, the second part of the first half was the exact opposite.

Ohio only scored four points in the final 10 minutes of the first half as they let Winthrop quickly comeback in the game.

The game entered halftime with Ohio up 30-25.

In the second half, Ohio got off to another hot start.

They extended to their lead to as much as 13 points when DeVaughn Washington made a jumper a little over three minutes into the second half.

But then, Winthrop started coming back just as they did in the first half.

Ohio blew a six-point lead with three minutes remaining in the second half and the game would enter overtime tied at 64-64.

D.J. Cooper was huge in the overtime period as he scored all eight points of his points in overtime to lead the Bobcats to victory.

Winthrop had a chance to tie the game with with four seconds remaining in overtime but Andre Jones missed a three pointer and Ohio would grab the rebound as they went on to win 77-74.

DeVaughn Washington and Tommy Freeman both had big games in the Bobcats victory.

Washington went for a season high 25 points and also grabbed 8 rebounds.

Freeman went for 21 points going 7-11 from behind the arc.

D.J. Cooper had 8 assists in the game.

The win doesn't really do much for Ohio in the standings. The game wasn't really significant as it was a non-conference game and doesn't impact Ohio in the MAC standings.

Also, since both teams have similar rpi's Ohio won't move up that much in the rpi rankings.

However, a win is a win. Ohio moves to 14-13 with the win and next plays February 23rd vs. Bowling Green.

Sabres Come Back From 2-Goal Deficit To Defeat Montreal

What a game! The Sabres twice came back from being down two goals (once in the game, once in the shootout) to come back and defeat the Montreal Canadiens 3-2 in a shootout.

The game didn't start out so well for the Sabres.

Max Pacioretty scored on a power play goal five minutes into the game to give the Canadiens a 1-0 lead.

Montreal was all over the Sabres in the first period as they heavily outshot the Sabres and were in the offensive zone for the majority of the period.

Then, in the second period, Montreal added to their lead when Benoit Pouliot scored on a beautiful pass to put the Canadiens up 2-0.

Things didn't look so good for the Sabres chances in this game.

But late in the second period, Drew Stafford scored for the Sabres to give them momentum heading into the third period.

With the Sabres down 2-1 in the third period, Jason Pominville scored off a nice pass from Jochen Hecht from behind the net to tie the game at 2-2.

The game headed to overtime with both teams tied at 2-2.

The overtime period was action packed with both teams recording multiple scoring chances. The Sabres best chance was when Tyler Myers blasted a slap shot that beat Montreal goaltender Carey Price and hit the post.

The game entered a shootout tied at at 2-2.

In the shootout, Montreal quickly took a 2-0 lead and appeared to be headed for the victory.

But Thomas Vanek and Tyler Ennis responded with shootout goals of their own for the Sabres as they miraculously tied up the shootout at 2-2.

When Max Pacioretty scored to put Montreal ahead 3-2, Nathan Gerbe responded for the Sabres to tie the game at 3-3.

The next four shooters for both teams failed to score as the shootout advanced to its 10th round.

In the 10th round, James Wisniewski failed to score for Montreal giving Jochen Hecht the opportunity to win the game for Buffalo.

Unlike the previous four shooters for Buffalo, Hecht scored and gave the Sabres the 3-2 shootout victory.

With the win, the Sabres continue their great play as of late. They are 7-2-1 their last 10 games and have been on fire.

Drew Stafford also scored again as he scored his 9th goal in the month of February.

The Sabres have moved into a tie for 9th place in the eastern conference with Atlanta while playing three fewer games.

Buffalo also moves within two points of Carolina for the final playoff spot in the eastern conference with two games in hand.

The Sabres next play February 16th against the rival Toronto Maple Leafs.

Balitc/Cooper Go For 24 Points Apiece As Ohio Comes Back To Defeat Buffalo

Ohio was embarrassed the last time they took on the Buffalo Bulls. And when I say, embarrassed, I mean really embarrassed. Earlier in the season, Ohio blew an 18 point lead at home and fell to Buffalo 73-68. This time around, things went to the contrary. Down by eight at the half, Ohio dominated in the second half as they defeated UB 76-69.

UB was ahead the entire first half as they entered halftime up 32-24. Ohio had trouble doing anything on the offensive side of the ball in the first half and couldn't maintain any legitimate runs.

In the second half, the game took a 180 degrees turn.

Ohio was dominant on offense as they scored 52 points in the second half. Ivo Baltic and D.J. Cooper couldn't be stopped.

With that being said, the game remained close to the very end.

Ohio slowly ate at UB's lead only to have UB respond with mini-runs of their own to regain control of the game almost every time.

Then, late in the second half, Ohio finally stopped UB from going on one of their mini-runs and took the lead.

Ohio would add onto the lead and take it all the way up to seven points as they went on to win 76-69.

Ivo Baltic continued his good play as of late as he scored 24 points and recorded 9 rebounds. He was a force and UB couldn't stop him in the second half.

D.J. Cooper also had a great game for the Bobcats as he too scored 24 points while recording 5 assists.

Ironically, besides Baltic and Cooper both scoring 24 points, they both also shot 8-15 from the field.

The win brings Ohio back to .500 on the season overall and in the MAC as they move to 13-13 (6-6).

This win was very important for Ohio. It is a statement win on the road against a legitimate MAC contender. This shows that Ohio is starting to regroup and may have the potential to make a run in the MAC tourney in March.

Ohio has won five of its last seven games.

Ohio next plays February 19th at Winthrop as part of the espnu bracketbusters series.

It was shaky at times, but I finished! Yes, I just completed my first online video recap for Hardwood Heroes. While I'm not that talented yet, I gave it my best and hope to get better. I'm keeping this to look back at some day.

Sabres Waste Stafford Hat-Trick as They Lose to Islanders in Overtime

Its not often that Ryan Miller allows seven goals in a game. In fact, that doesn't happen that often with any goalies in the NHL. But it happened Sunday afternoon as the Sabres wasted an offensive outburst and lost 7-6 in overtime to the New York Islanders.

There were way too many goals scored in the game to recap everything so for this one time only, I'm going to generalize what happened. Sorry...........I just don't have enough time to write this tonight.

The game started and ended in goal scoring sprees.

Michael Grabner opened the scoring 40 seconds into the game to put the Islanders up 1-0. It was his first of three goals on the night as he recorded a hat-trick.

Buffalo responded by scoring three of the next four goals and took a 3-2 lead entering the first intermission.

Drew Stafford finished the first period with two goals while linemates Tyler Ennis and Tim Connolly each had two assists.

In the second period, the Sabres extended their lead to 4-2 when Nathan Gerbe put in his 7th goal of the season.

The Islanders then responded by scoring the next two goals of the game to tie the game at 4-4.

Tyler Myers put the Sabres up 5-4 but the Sabres quickly saw their lead turn into a deficit.

Milan Jurcina and Ty Wishart both scored on back-to-back power plays for the Islanders which gave them the lead midway through the 3rd period.

But the game wasn't over yet.

Drew Stafford added his third goal of the game late in the third period to to complete the hat-trick and tie the game at 6-6.

The game would enter overtime at 6-6 when Michael Grabner scored to win the game for the Islanders. The goal was Grabner's 24th goal of the season and completed his hat-trick on the night.

Ryan Miller had a less than stellar night. He allowed multiple soft goals and only faced 26 shots. To allow seven goals on 26 shots is horrible and cost the Sabres the game on this day.

Its a shame he had to play so poorly when the Sabres offense was playing so well. Drew Stafford recorded his fourth hat-trick of the season and Tyler Ennis recorded three assists.

Normally when they Sabres offense produces that way, they win. Unfortunately for them, it didn't work out that way today.

The loss costs the Sabres one point in the eastern conference standings as they fall four points behind Carolina for 8th place in the eastern conference.

Carolina defeated Atlanta on Sunday to move an additional point ahead of the Sabres.

The Sabres have little time to rest as they next play Tuesday when they take on the Montreal Canadiens in a game that will be nationally televised on Versus.

Ohio Misses Buzzer Beater, Falls To Western Michigan

Ohio has had a miserable record in close games all season long. The trend continued Saturday evening when Tommy Freeman missed a buzzer beater to win and Ohio fell to Western Michigan 85-83.

The game was close throughout with neither team owning a significant lead throughout the game.

Western Michigan led 39-34 at halftime.

In the second half, the game remained very tight. Every possession was of vital importance as the game was constantly within five points or less.

It appeared that Demetrius Ward put the game away for Western Michigan when he made both free throws to put the Broncos up five with nine seconds remaining

But Ohio refused to give up despite the long odds.

D.J. Cooper led the Bobcats down the court and made a three pointer to make it a two point deficit for Ohio with six seconds left.

It came down to a praying game for Ohio.

They had to foul and hope that Western Michigan missed at least one of their free throws while also making a basket of their own before time expires to tie or win the game.

The first part of the plan worked to perfection.

Ohio fouled Western Michigan with four seconds remaining and Mike Douglas went to the line with a chance to end the game for the Broncos.

Unfortunately for Western Michigan, he wasn't the best man for the job as he missed both free throw attempts giving the Bobcats a chance to win the game on a three pointer.

Ohio went down the court and Tommy Freeman put up a three point attempt right as time expired.

Sadly for Bobcat fans, it didn't go in and Ohio went on to lose by 85-83.

Despite the loss, there were some nice performances by Bobcat players.

Cooper played despite injury concerns before the game and went off for 17 points and 5 assists.

DeVaughn Washington had a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds.

Ivo Baltic had another decent offensive game as he scored 14 points and grabbed 8 rebounds.

For Western Michigan, Fienard Whitfield and Demetrius Ward dominated as they combined for 49 points (27 and 22 points respectively).

The key to the game was three point shooting. The Broncos shot 12-21 (57.1%) from three point land on the night and that was the difference in the game as Ohio only shot 5-14 from behind the arc.

With the loss, Ohio falls below .500 again as they go to 12-13 (5-6) and next play February 15th at Buffalo.

Sabres Take Down Florida In Overtime: Move Within Two Points of Playoffs

The Sabres are inching closer and closer to the 8th and final playoff spot in the eastern conference. Buffalo defeated Florida 3-2 in overtime on a Tyler Myers goal with 5 seconds remaining in overtime to move within two points of the final playoff spot in the eastern conference.

The game got off to a slow start as neither team scored in the first period.

In the second period, Buffalo opened up the scoring when Mike Weber lit the lamp for his third goal of the season.

Unfortunately for the Sabres, Florida responded later in the period when Steve Bernier scored to tie the game up at 1-1.

It was much the same in the third period.

Thomas Vanek scored for Buffalo midway through the third period to give the Sabres a 2-1 lead but Marty Reasoner responded a minute later for the Panthers to tie the game at 2-2.

The game would remain tied at 2-2 and head into overtime.

It appeared that the game was bound for a shootout when Tyler Myers scored with five seconds remaining to give the Sabres the 3-2 win.

The win brings the Sabres within 2 points of Carolina for the final playoff spot in the eastern conference with two games in hand.

The Sabres have been playing great as of late and it has shown in the win column as well as the box score.

After a poor start, the Sabres finally appear to be on a roll winning their last three games and seven of their last ten.

Also, the Sabres are finally even in team goal differential on the season as they have scored 155 goals while allowing only 155 goals.

The Sabres next play February 13th vs. the New York Islanders.

Ohio Defeats Toledo With Ease

The road back to respectability for Ohio is finally taking off on its journey. After an awful start to the season which saw Ohio three games under .500, the Bobcats have managed to win four of their last five games to get back to .500 on the season.

Ohio had little problem defeating Toledo on Wednesday night as they cruised to a 71-58 victory.

The Bobcats led by as many as 24 points and led 36-23 at halftime.

Late in the first half, D.J. Cooper went down with an ankle injury. He appeared to be in considerable pain as he was screaming on the floor.

He needed to be assisted by two trainers to get off the court and tried to avoid putting weight on his foot.

Cooper attempted to play in the second half but checked out soon after the first timeout.

With Cooper out, Nick Kellogg and T.J. Hall made up for his minutes lost.

Kellogg and Hall performed well as Ohio dominated in the second half and led 68-44 with 6:14 remaining.

Tommy Freeman had a career game as he made 7 three pointers for 21 points.

Ivo Baltic and DeVaughn Washington both had solid games scoring 16 and 14 points respectively.

Nick Kellogg played decent with the extra minutes passing for six assists on the night.

Ohio had a good defensive effort on the night. They held Toledo to 58 points, 42.6% shooting, forced 18 turnovers, and had 12 steals.

That combined with Ohio's nice offensive efficiency on the night led to a fairly easy win for the Bobcats.

With the win, Ohio moves to 12-12 (5-5) and next plays February 12th at Western Michigan.

Stafford's Hat-Trick Leads Sabres In Comeback Victory Over Tampa Bay

Wow!........ That's all Tampa Bay fan's could say after seeing the Sabres score five goals in the third period to comeback and defeat the Lightning 7-4 on Tuesday night.

The game got off to a decent start.

Steve Bergenheim opened the scoring as he put Tampa Bay ahead 1-0 early in the first period.

Then, 10 minutes later, Drew Stafford responded for the Sabres scoring his first of three goals on the night to tie the game at 1-1.

In the second period, the Sabres got thoroughly dominated.

Vincent Lecavalier and Steve Bergenheim scored for Tampa Bay to give the Lightning a two goal lead at 3-1.

The Lightning heavily outshot the Sabres and controlled the flow for the majority of the period.

But late in the period, Thomas Vanek scored for the Sabres to bring the Sabres within one.

Vanek's goal might've only counted as one goal on the scoreboard but it meant much more to the Sabres. It gave Buffalo the momentum entering the second intermission and had them coming out flying in the third period.

In the third period, the Sabres went on a goal scoring rage.

The Sabres scored five consecutive goals to start the third period to take a 7-3 lead.

Jordan Leopold scored the game tying goal while Tim Connolly scored to give the Sabres their first lead of the game at 4-3.

Then, Vanek added his second goal of the game to give the Sabres a 5-3 lead.

Vanek's three point night was his second consecutive game with three points.

The Sabres weren't done though.

Drew Stafford scored two more goals late in the third period to complete the hat-trick and give the Sabres the 7-3 lead.

For Stafford, its his third hat-trick of the season and fifth of his career. Stafford is enjoying his best season in the pros and has helped the Sabres out immensely while in the lineup.

Vincent Lecavalier scored a garbage time power play goal to bring the game to its final score of 7-4.

Lecavalier had a good game despite the loss scoring two goals and recording an assist.

The win helps the Sabres a lot in the playoffs standings.

The Sabres stand in 10th place in the eastern conference and are only four points back of 8th place Carolina with two games in hand.

Also, they only stand three points back of 9th place Atlanta with four games in hand.

The Sabres next play February 10th at Florida.

B-Zone College Basketball Update

On Friday, Canisius and Niagara were in action

Friday Games:

Marist 60, Canisius 75- Canisius evened up their record with a win over Marist on Friday night. The Golden Griffins had five player score in double digits led by Julius Coles 18 points. Canisius had a very good game handling the ball as they only committed five turnovers the entire game and revenged a loss from earlier in the season to Marist.

With the win, Canisius moves to 11-11 (5-7) and next plays February 6th vs. St. Peter's

St. Peter's 70, Niagara 47- When you shoot 26.1% from the field, you're probably going to get blown out most of the time. That's exactly what happened to Niagara on Friday night. They shot terribly, got out-rebounded by a ton, and turned the ball over 22 times. Those are all signs of an awful team which Niagara truly is.

With the loss, Niagara falls to 4-20 (1-11) and next plays February 6th vs. Marist.

On Saturday, Ohio, St. Bonaventure, Buffalo, and Syracuse were in action.

Northern Illinois 73, Ohio 80- Ivo Baltic had a career high 31 points as he led Ohio to an 80-73 victory over Northern Illinois. Ohio had a great game handling the ball committing a season low 8 turnovers. Ohio led for basically the entire game as they only trailed once at 2-0 NIU.

Duquesne 62, St. Bonaventure 64- What a win for St. Bonaventure. The Bonnies defeated the undefeated Atlantic 10 leaders for their fourth conference win of the season. Michael Davenport hit a 3-pointer with 3 seconds remaining to give the Bonnies the win. Andrew Nicholson had a decent game with 15 points and 6 rebounds.

With the win, St. Bonaventure moves to 12-10 (4-5) and next plays February 12th vs. La Salle.

Buffalo 71, Ball State 72- Tough loss for UB on Saturday. They went on the road to Muncie to take on the top team in the MAC West and fought hard the entire game only to lose by 1 point. Zach Filzen had a great game with 26 points but it just wasn't enough for the win. Jawaan Alston had a chance to tie the game with under a minute remaining but only hit one of two free throws.

With the loss, Buffalo falls to 14-7 (6-3) and next plays February 8th vs. Central Michigan.

#17 Syracuse 72, South Florida 49- Rick Jackson had another huge game with another double-double to lead the Orangemen to the blowout victory. Jackson had 21 points and 12 rebounds. Syracuse out-rebounded USF 40-26.

With the win, Syracuse moves to 20-4 (7-4) and next plays February 9th vs. #14 Georgetown on espn.

Ivo Baltic Goes For Career High 31 Points As Ohio Defeats Northern Illinois

Ivo Baltic....Ivo Baltic....Ivo Baltic....

That's what the O-Zone was cheering on Saturday afternoon as Ohio forward Ivo Baltic went off for a career high 31 points in Ohio's 80-73 win over Northern Illinois.

Baltic was zoned in the entire game and nobody on Northern Illinois could stop him.

Game Recap:

Saturday's contest between Northern Illinois and Ohio University was not nearly as close as the final score would indicate.

Northern Illinois only led once in the entire game and that was when they were ahead 2-0. After Ohio took the lead at 3-2, the Huskies never even sniffed a lead.

The game was never out of hand but it was never very close.

Ohio entered halftime with a 39-30 lead.

In the second half, the Bobcats came out continuing to play the way they did in the first half. They were playing tough and trying to score points in the paint.

Ohio's lead hovered around eight to ten points for most of the second half until Xavier Silas made a three pointer with 4:18 remaining in the second half to cut the Huskies deficit to five.

However, that was as close as the Huskies would get. The three pointer by Silas was the end of Northern Illinois' run to get back into the game.

The Huskies quickly lost grasp of their comeback effort and Ohio took back control of the game soon after before winning 80-73.

As stated earlier, Ivo Baltic had a great game with 31 points and 9 rebounds on 12-20 shooting.

DeVaughn Washington also had a nice effort with 16 points and 6 rebounds.

D.J. Cooper had a typical Cooper performance scoring 13 points and adding 7 assists.

The key stat in the game was that Ohio outscored Northern Illinois 38-16 in the paint. Ohio absolutely dominated inside and it showed in the box score.

Sabres Blow 2-Goal Lead As They Fall To Pittsburgh

Well, you never like to lose. And you really don't like to lose after you've had a two goal lead in the game. The Sabres experienced the pain of blowing a two goal lead and losing Saturday night as they lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2.

The Sabres got off to a very fast start.

Paul Gaustad scored 17 seconds into the game to give the Sabres a 1-0 lead.

Then, seven minutes into the first period, Mike Grier added his third goal of the season and the Sabres went ahead 2-0.

Buffalo remained ahead 2-0 entering the first intermission.

You figured that the Sabres had to keep chipping at Pittsburgh. Despite the two goal lead, no lead is safe versus Pittsburgh even with them missing Sidney Crosby.

In fact, Pittsburgh came back from a two goal deficit earlier this week versus the New York Rangers.

The Sabres didn't press hard enough on the pedal though. Pittsburgh dominated the action in the second period and the tone of the game quickly changed.

Pittsburgh scored three goals in under a three and a half minute span to not only erase Buffalo's lead but to take the lead for themselves at 3-2.

Dustin Jeffrey started the scoring just under four minutes into the second period to bring the Penguins within one.

Then Tyler Kennedy and Matt Cooke scored less than a minute apart from each other and Pittsburgh took the lead at 3-2.

Nobody else scored the rest of the way and the Pittsburgh sent Buffalo home with a 3-2 loss.

The loss doesn't kill the Sabres but it was a blown opportunity to make up ground in the playoff chase.

The Sabres are currently in 11th place in the eastern conference but are only six points back of 8th place Atlanta with four games in hand.

Carolina and Florida are also ahead of Buffalo but the Sabres have two games in hand on both of them.

On Saturday night, Atlanta takes on Carolina. This makes it critical that Buffalo wins their next game so they don't lose more ground on 8th place.

The Sabres next play February 5th at home against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Super Bowl Preview: Who's Gonna Win?

Finally, after two weeks of waiting, the Super Bowl is almost here. It is the biggest stage in football and the biggest stage for those betting on football. While I don't gamble, I pick all the football games during the season. I've been doing a good job so far but won't consider this season a success unless I cap it off with a win.

Super Bowl Sunday

Pittsburgh vs. Green Bay: Pittsburgh

Comment- This is honestly my favorite Super Bowl match up of all time. I like the way both teams plays and enjoy watching their games. I also like to see both of them succeed. I have no rooting interest in this game (as of yet) so my pick is unbiased.

I like Pittsburgh because I feel that they are built better to win this game. They have the top run defense in the league and Green Bay will struggle to run the ball against them. In addition to that, they have a good enough secondary to the point where Aaron Rodgers shouldn't pass all over them the way he did against the Falcons and the Eagles.

Pittsburgh's offense may not be elite but they always do the job. They score just enough points to win the big games and are led by legendary quarterback Ben Roethlisberger (yes, I just placed the legend tag on him). All Big Ben seems to do is win Super Bowls and rape girls (ouch......). I feel as though he can't lose the big one and I can't see him losing on Sunday.

It should be a good game and I'm really excited for it. Both teams are very talented on both sides of the ball and it should be a really close game.

I have no rooting interest but I do hope that former UB running back James Starks has a great game for Green Bay.

B-Zone College Basketball Update

On Wednesday, Ohio, St. Bonaventure, and Syracuse were all in action.

Buffalo was also scheduled to play on Wednesday night but the game was postponed due to the massive winter storm hitting the country. The game was made up on Thursday afternoon.

Wednesday Games

Ohio 85, Central Michigan 91- Very disappointing loss for Ohio. That is about the only way you can describe a loss like this to a five win team this late in the season. D.J. Cooper had a massive game for Ohio with 30 points and 6 assists. Tommy Freeman also had a solid effort with 16 points. Ohio lost this game based on horrible defense and committing too many fouls. Trey Zeigler and Jalin Thomas both scored over 20 points apiece for Central Michigan scoring 24 and 22 points respectively.

With the loss, Ohio falls to 10-12 (3-5) and next plays February 5th at home vs. Northern Illinois.

St. Bonaventure 61, Dayton 63- An amazing effort from Andrew Nicholson wasn't enough to lift the Bonnies past the Dayton Flyers for the upset win on Wednesday. Nicholson play was just amazing. He recorded a double-double with 35 points and 11 rebounds. The game was close throughout with Dayton being more clutch in the end. The key to the game was bench scoring. Dayton's bench outscored St. Bonaventure's bench 20-2. Chris Johnson led the Flyers in scoring with 14 points.

With the loss, St. Bonaventure falls to 11-10 (3-5) and next plays February 5th vs. Atlantic 1o leader Duquesne.

#17 Syracuse 66, #7 UCONN 58- What a way to end a four-game losing streak. Syracuse came up with a nice victory over UCONN on Wednesday night on the road to re-establish that they are a team that must be reckoned with in the Big East. Rick Jackson had another good game for Syracuse as he got another double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Brandon Triche also chipped in 16 points for the Orangemen. The key to the win for Syracuse was limiting UCONN guard Kemba Walker to only eight points. Walker entered the game averaging 24 points per game.

Thursday Games

Toledo 58, Buffalo 81-When a snow storm cancelled Wednesday night's game featuring Toledo vs. Buffalo, the schedule makers decided to just move the game back a day. For UB, I don't think it would've made a difference. Buffalo extended their winning streak to six straight games as they crushed Toledo by 23 points. Zach Filzen led the Bulls with 23 points with Byron Mulkey not too far behind with 20 points. One of the keys to the game was rebounding as UB out-rebounded Toledo 31-15. With the win, Buffalo goes into a tie with Bowling Green for 1st place in the MAC East.

With the win, Buffalo moves to 14-6 (6-2) and next plays February 5th at Ball State.

Sabres Sale to Pegula Official

On Tuesday, the Sabres sale to Terry Pegula was made official according to WGR550. The agreement was completed around 1pm today.

The NHL still has to review the terms of the sale and it could take weeks before they approve it.

The announced sale will take place on Thursday. However, Terry Pegula (New Sabres Owner) will not be attendance. Tom Golisano and Larry Quinn will be there though.

Ironically, other Sabres news came out recently that the Sabres GM Darcy Regier signed a 1-year contract extension last fall.

This comes as news since many people questioned his job security for after this season.

Other news also came out that Lindy Ruff declined a contract extension from the Sabres. There are rumors that he may want to become a GM instead of coaching (just a rumor at the moment).

I honestly don't care if he becomes a GM as long as he stays as the coach of the Sabres. I have enough faith in Ruff to give him both positions.

This does however create the possibility that Ruff may leave after the season.

So there you have it. A lot of strange things are going around the Sabres organization right now.

These moves and changes that are occurring now will definitely have a major impact on the direction of the Sabres in the future.
